Taxonomy
Palaeostella was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Palaeostella solida. It is the type genus of Palaeostellidae.

It was assigned to Palasterinidae by Schuchert (1915); to Palaeostellidae by Lehmann (1957); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Xenasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
