Trimeraster was named by Schöndorf (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Trimeraster parvulus.

It was assigned to Xenasteridae by Schöndorf (1909), Schuchert (1915) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002).
