Taxonomy
Xenaster was named by Simonovitsch (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Xenaster margaritatus. It is the type genus of Xenasteridae.

It was assigned to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Xenasteridae by Schöndorf (1909), Schöndorf (1909), Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
