Taxonomy
Delthyris mucronatus was named by Conrad (1841). It is the type species of Mucrospirifer.

It was recombined as Spirifer mucronatus by Shimer and Grabau (1902); it was recombined as Mucrospirifer mucronatus by Grabau (1931) and Tillman (1964).

T. A. Conrad 1841Trigonal, compressed, with numerous ribs, crossed by prominent lines; cardinal line extremely elongated and mucronate at the extremities; mesial elevation flattened and divided by a longitudinal sulcus. Width 3 inches; from beak to base three-quarters of an inch.
