Lecanella was named by Zittel (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-l K Sn Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Lecanella pateraeformis. It is the type genus of Lecanellidae.
It was assigned to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lecanellidae by Finks et al. (2004).
