Taxonomy
Compsaster was named by Worthen and Miller (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l C Serp-l]. Its type is Compsaster formosus. It is the type genus of Compsasteridae. It was considered monophyletic by Blake and Hagdorn (2003).

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Compsasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake (2002), Blake and Hagdorn (2003) and Blake (2018).
