Taxonomy
Strophomena perplana was named by Conrad (1839). It is the type species of Protoleptostrophia.

It was recombined as Strophodonta perplana by Hall (1867); it was recombined as Stropheodonta perplana by Schuchert (1897); it was recombined as Leptostrophia perplana by Clarke (1903); it was recombined as Protoleptostrophia perplana by Caster (1939) and Ellison (1965).
