Permaster was named by Kesling (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neopalaeasteridae by Kesling (1969) and Blake and Elliott (2003).
