Promopalaeaster was named by Schuchert (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeaster granulosa. It is the type genus of Promopalaeasteridae, Promopalaeasterinae.
It was assigned to Promopalaeasterinae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1916) and Owen (1965); to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Asteroidea by Dean Shackleton (2005); and to Promopalaeasteridae by Schuchert (1914), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
It was assigned to Promopalaeasterinae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1916) and Owen (1965); to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Asteroidea by Dean Shackleton (2005); and to Promopalaeasteridae by Schuchert (1914), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
