Taxonomy
Salteraster was named by Stürtz (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l S Sepkoski's reference number: 239]. Its type is Palaeaster asperrima.

It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Schuchert (1915) and Dean Shackleton (2005).

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Urasterellidae by Spencer (1918), Withers and Keble (1934), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake and Rozhnov (2007).
