Yarravaster was named by Spencer (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: S]. Its type is Caractacaster yarraensis.

It was assigned to Mesopalaeasterinae by Owen (1965); to Eoactinidae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asteroidea by Blake (2018).
