Afraster was named by Blake et al. (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Afraster scalariformis.

It was assigned to Pedicellasteridae by Blake et al. (1996); and to Forcipulatida by Sepkoski (2002).
