Asterias was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie R]. It is extant. Its type is Asterias rubens. It is the type genus of Asteriinae.

It was assigned to Asteriidae by Gray (1840); to Asteriinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Forcipulatida by Sepkoski (2002).
