Atrypa eximia was named by Hall (1843).

It was recombined as Rhynchonella (Stenocisma) eximia by Hall (1867); it was recombined as Camarotoechia eximia by Hall and Clarke (1893); it was recombined as Cupularostrum eximia by Sartenaer (1961).
