Taxonomy
Aspidaster was named by de Loriol (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath T Dani]. It is not extant. Its type is Aspidaster delgadoi. It was considered monophyletic by Villier et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stauranderasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966), Villier et al. (2004) and Villier (2010).

L. Villier et al. 2004External face with large deeply impressed granule pits, digging into a raised central area and a depressed margin. Articulatory processes kidney-shape in external view. No pedicellariae pits identified. Arms elongate with parallel sides. Superomarginal and abactinal plates differentiated. Passageway for the papullae visible at plate corners. A single row of abactinals in the arms. Primary circlet plates enlarged.
