Caletaster was named by Breton (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Ceno-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Caletaster girardi.
It was assigned to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Goniasteridae by Breton (1978), Breton (1992), Breton and Néraudeau (2008) and Villier (2010).

G. Breton 1992 | Body stellate, arms short, triangular, with a round interbrachial arc. Marginal plates numerous, all short, slightly thorny. Superomarginal join at mid length of the arm. External face of the marginal convex, but never domed. Ornament of numerous dense rounded and evenly distributed granule-pits, sometime associated with tiny tubercles. Rare pedicellariae pits of rounded to oval shape, winged or not. |
