Chariaster was named by de Loriol (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ophidiasteridae by de Loriol (1909) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).

W. K. Spencer and C. W. Wright 1966Disk small. Arms long and slender arms, wider at base. Rounded arm tip. Marginals alternate in two prominent rows. Superomarginal plates generally with a large tubercle. Aboral surface flat but with median row formed by swollen intersection of long abactinal plates, most with a short rounded spine. Ornament of dense granules. Large papular area. Adambulacrals with one subambulacral spine.
