Taxonomy
Hippasteria was named by Gray (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: K u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Hippasteriinae.

It was assigned to Hippasteriinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Goniasteridae by Forbes (1841) and Clark and Downey (1992); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
