Mediaster was named by Stimpson (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Clark and Downey (1992); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
