Miopentagonaster was named by Mercier (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call]. It is not extant. Its type is Miopentagonaster calloviensis.

It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Mercier (1935) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
