Noviaster was named by Valette (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath]. It is not extant. Its type is Noviaster lissajousi.

It was assigned to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Goniasteridae by Valette (1929), Spencer and Wright (1966), Hess (1972), Hess (1991) and Gale (2011).
