Lewinia was named by Rigby and Webby (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Lewinia cavernosa.

It was assigned to Haplistiidae by Rigby and Webby (1988); and to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002).
