Taxonomy
Phocidaster was named by Spencer (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 942]. It is not extant. Its type is Phocidaster grandis.

It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Spencer (1913); to Pycinasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
