Nautilus kayeanus was named by Blanford (1861).

It was recombined as Nautilus (Cymatoceras) kayeanus by Spengler (1910); it was recombined as Cymatoceras kayeanus by Kummel (1956); it was recombined as Cymatoceras kayeanum by Shimansky (1975).
