Notomyotida was named by Ludwig (1910) [Initial spelling Notomyota, corrected by McKnight (1975)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987).

It was assigned to Surculifera by Gale (1987); to Valvatacea by Blake (1989); and to Asteroidea by Sepkoski (2002).
