Advenaster was named by Hess (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 934]. Its type is Advenaster inermis.

It was assigned to Astropectininae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Paxillosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Astropectinidae by Hess (1955), Hess (1972) and Villier (2008).

H. Hess 1955The lateral faces for articulation with the adjoining plates develop on the entire lateral faces of the marginals. Marginal plates with ornament of tiny rounded tubercles, bearing short acicular spines. Actinolateral plates large, one row extending far into the arm (2/3 of arm length). Abactinal plates compact, rounded.
