Subvestinautilus maritimus was named by Shimanskiy (1967). Its type specimen is PIN 1620/1, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Usva river, 1.2 km below Gromovoy village, which is in a Visean marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
