Sphenodiscus ismaelis was named by Zittel (1884). It is the type species of Libycoceras.
It was recombined as Libycoceras ismaele by Hyatt (1903); it was recombined as Libycoceras ismaeli by Al-Harithi and Ibrahim (1992); it was recombined as Libycoceras ismaelis by Hyatt (1900) and Hewaidy et al. (2019).
