Tethyaster was named by Sladen (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 934]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Paxillosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Astropectinidae by Sladen (1889), Breton (1995) and Fernández et al. (2014).
