Echinaster was named by Müller and Troschel (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 934]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Echinasteridae.
It was assigned to Echinasteridae by Verrill (1870) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Spinulosida by Sepkoski (2002).
