Arkonaster was named by Kesling (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give]. It is not extant. Its type is Arkonaster topororum.

It was assigned to Arkonasteridae by Kesling (1982); to Asteroidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Helianthasteridae by Blake (2009) and Blake (2018).

D. B. Blake 2009Twenty-eight-armed helianthasterid. Primary ossicles of dorsal skeleton apparently limited to comparatively robust, disklike, spine-bearing carinal series. Adambulacrals bearing series of three spines. Circumoral longer than next ambulacral. Pedicellariae of two distinct size classes, valves three. MAO spines not recognized.
