Mesotremaster was named by Hess (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u J Oxfo-m]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Hess (1972).

It was assigned to Tremasterinae by Hess (1972); to Asteroidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asterinidae by Gale (2011).
