Mesotremaster was named by Hess (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u J Oxfo-m]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Hess (1972) and Gale (2018).

It was assigned to Tremasterinae by Hess (1972); to Asteroidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Asterinidae by Gale (2011); and to Tremasteridae by Gale (2018).
