Protothyraster was named by Hess (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Rhopia prisca.

It was assigned to Echinasteridae by Hess (1970); to Asteroidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Forcipulatida by Gale (2011); and to Zorocallida by Fau and Villier (2023).
