Medusaster was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Medusaster rhenanus.

It was assigned to Palaeosolasteridae by Schuchert (1915); to Taeniactininae by Lehmann (1957); to Palaeuridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Stenurida by Sepkoski (2002).
