Germanonautilus popowi was named by Sobolev (1989). Its type specimen is IGiG 759/91, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Elege Creek, Indigirka River, which is in a Lacian marine siliciclastic in the Russian Federation.
