Armathyraster was named by Harper and Morris (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l Sepkoski's reference number: 340]. Its type is Armathyraster paradoxis. It is the type genus of Armathyrasterinae.

It was assigned to Armathyrasterinae by Harper and Morris (1978); and to Oegophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
