Mastigophiura was named by Lehmann (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Mastigophiura grandis.

It was assigned to Protasteridae by Lehmann (1957) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Oegophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
