Tremataster was named by Worthen and Miller (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Tremataster difficilis.

It was assigned to Ophiurinidae by Schuchert (1915); to Furcasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Oegophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
