Taxonomy
Eospondylus was named by Gregory (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-l D Emsi-l]. Its type is Ophiurella primigenia. It is the type genus of Eospondylidae.

It was assigned to Eoluidiidae by Schuchert (1915); to Hallasteridae by Spencer (1925) and Lehmann (1957); to Lapworthuridae by Owen (1965); to Eospondylidae by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Boczarowski (2001); and to Phrynophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
