Kentrospondylus was named by Lehmann (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Kentrospondylus decadactylus.

It was assigned to Hallasteridae by Lehmann (1957); to Eospondylidae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Phrynophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
