Amphioplus was named by Verrill (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Amphiurinae by Matsumoto (1915); to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Amphiuridae by Verrill (1899), Berry (1941), Spencer and Wright (1966) and O'Hara et al. (2018).
