Taxonomy
Cholaster was named by Worthen and Miller (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l]. Its type is Cholaster peculiaris. It is the type genus of Cholasteridae.

It was assigned to Cholasteridae by Worthen and Miller (1883) and Schuchert (1915); to Ophiurinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
