Ophiocoma was named by Agassiz (1836) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Ophiocominae by Matsumoto (1915); to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophiocomidae by Ljungman (1867), Spencer and Wright (1966), Jagt (2000), Storc and Zitt (2008) and O'Hara et al. (2018).
