Cravenoceras insolitum was named by Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1971). Its type specimen is PIN 455/36128, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Dombar Hills, sample 13, which is in a Pendleian carbonate limestone in Kazakhstan.
