Ophiurella was named by Agassiz (1836) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Ophiura speciosa.

It was assigned to Ophiuroidea by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
