Ophiurina was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Ophiurina lymani. It is the type genus of Ophiurinidae.
It was assigned to Aganasteridae by Spencer (1925) and Lehmann (1957); to Ophiurinidae by Schuchert (1915), Owen (1965) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
