Syntomospina was named by Morris et al. (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l Sepkoski's reference number: 341]. Its type is Syntomospina kuehni.

It was assigned to Ophiurinidae by Morris et al. (1973); and to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).

Morris et al. 1973Small ophiuroids with long thin, apparently non-spinose, arms, but with definite paired spines on distinct ridges near arm bases; lateral arm shields wrapped around arm and joining at mid-line on oral side, triangular oral arm plates reduced and not developed in distal portion of the arm; marginals absent around small central disc; jaw plates rounded triangular in shape and undivided.
