Megarhiza was named by Schrammen (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Megarhiza dubia. It is the type genus of Megarhizidae.
It was assigned to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Megarhizidae by Finks et al. (2004).
