Hirneacrinus was named by Frest and Strimple (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 243]. It is not extant. Its type is Hirneacrinus cupellaeformis.

It was assigned to Hirneacrinidae by Frest and Strimple (1977); and to Diplobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
